God says in order to have a personal relationship with Him, you must be “born again”. In John 3:7, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again.” The Bible gives us the understanding of why we must be born again and how we can be born again. Nicodemus asked Jesus, “How can a man be born(again) when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his Mother’s womb and be born?”

This is a question every man, woman, boy and girl should ponder. Before we see the response of Jesus to his question, let us first look at why we must be born again. The Bible tells us, we must realize we are a sinner before a Holy God. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).  Because we are sinners, we are faced with the results of sin which is death, “For the wages [payment] of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). The death described in the verse is not only physical but also spiritual, which includes eternal separation from a Holy God in a place called Hell.

We may think of ourselves as a good person, yet we must be completely righteous to be able to stand in the presence of God, who is Holy. The Bible tells us how we really stand before God by stating, “As it is written, there is none righteous,no, not one..” (Romans 3:10).  We must somehow be given a righteousness that is complete, pure and holy. The Bible is the source for our dilemma. It states, ” But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference..”(Romans 3:21-22)

This leads us to the answer to the question of Nicodemus, “How can a man be born(again)..”. God tells us the righteousness we need is the “righteousness of God” Himself. We obtain that by faith(trust) in the finished work of Jesus Christ as the verse says, “by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.” That finished work was His death and shed blood on the Cross to pay for the penalty of our sin. The Bible explains, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Romans 5:8-10).

God loved us so much He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to bear our sin and die in our place. “ . . . He hath made Him [Jesus, Who knew no sin] to be sin for us . . . that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).  Since Jesus Christ died for all the sin of all the world, “God . . . commandeth all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). This repentance is a change of mind that agrees with God that one is a sinner, and also agrees with what Jesus did for us on the Cross.  Simply believe on Him as the One who bore your sin, died in your place, was buried, and whom God resurrected. His resurrection powerfully assures that the believer can claim everlasting life when Jesus is received(believed on) as Savior.  As the Bible says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (born again)” (Romans 10:13).

So what did Jesus say to Nicodemus? ” For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son(Jesus Christ), that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have evelasting life” (John 3:16).

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ today to be “born again”!
